Chapter Eleven

“Meetups”

Rip

“Hey, stranger.” Shelby laughed and sauntered her way up my driveway.

I growled. What the hell was she doing here? I met her halfway up my driveway.

She arched a saucy brow. Her blond hair was fluttering around her shoulders, and she was wearing daisy dukes and was carrying a McDonald’s fast food paper bag. She loved junk food.

“Why’re you meeting me here,” she fluttered her lashes at me, “We could take this inside.”

“No.”

She pursed her lips trying too hard. “I reckon since you canceled on me last week you might be needing some company before you go off on night shift.” She knew my schedule because that’s when I typically called on her for a booty call.

I was behaving like a caveman. I moved back and went into the house, she followed me. “That’s more like it Rip.”

I grimaced at her use of my name. There was one person I wanted to call me by that name.

“Look, Shells this thing we had going, I’m done with it. For good. You deserve someone that appreciates you.”

She stopped beside my massive leather couch, laughter dying from her girl next door face. “Whaddaya mean? I haven’t ever laid claim to you, and you know I go my own way. Why do you want to mess with what we got going?”

“I found someone I want to spend real time with.”

Shelby’s eyes narrowed to slits, she propped a hand on her hip, “It can’t be anyone around here, most folks know that we sleep together.”

“It’s none of your business who it is.”

She dropped the greasy bag of McDonalds onto my couch. I grimace but refrain from grabbing and dumping it.

I fought for patience. “It doesn’t matter. I’m through sleeping with you and you can go on and marry Connor or one of the dozen fools that have been after you since high school.”

She pouted, seeing that her show of anger wasn’t working. “Nothing must change, even with a new girlfriend. I’ll just come when you call, okay?”

The sound of a knock on the door made us both turn. I wasn’t expecting anyone. I opened it and Ms. Aggie stood there, a fragrant foil covered casserole dish in her hand. “Hey, don’t want to disturb you but I know you’re a cop and all and I thought that you wouldn’t have much time to cook. Bodie barely eats real food so I thought you wouldn’t mind actually eating my mother’s fantastic lasagna. Think of it like a belated welcome dish from your new neighbors.”

I didn’t even bother looking at the dish because I could feel her eyes on me. I looked over Ms. Aggie’s head and Bodie is leaning next to her mom’s car, her eyes hooded but laser focused on me. I saw the moment she saw Shelby behind me. She stood up straight. Her eyes going from me to Shelby’s and back again.

She was off the car and on my porch in split second.

Ms. Aggie turned to her daughter, “Bodie, what’s the matter?”

“Aggie, can I talk to Ripton alone?” She bit out, her big, brown eyes threatening to decapitate me.
